In spirit of Gay Pride Week, Id like to change it up and do an article on LGBTs influence in video games. Being a Gaymer myself, I get some pleasure in seeing the involvement of homosexuality in my video games. With it being a touchy subject and involvement with the themes of gaming these days, it is unfortunate it is a scarce touch in games. In any case, whether its comedy relief in Enchanted Arms, relationships in Fable and Skyrim, or lesbian blue alien sex in Mass Effect, I enjoy its involvement. Read on gamers!
What I did notice in the research I did on LGBT in gaming was that there isnt very much confirmed homosexual characters. For instance, Super Mario Bros 2 features the gender confused Birdo. Birdo is originally stated as a male character that thinks he is a female who wants to be called Birdetta. Birdos character eventually switches to being a female character but was then changed back to the gender confused character in the Brawl game.
The Street Fighter character Zangief was believed to be gay for some time but this was later disputed when the character is stated to have a girlfriend. The Street Fighter character Abel also hints to being gay in his prologue when he is referenced to settling down with a fellow French mercenary. Another Street Fighter character Juri Han hints to an interest in women when in her rival cutscenes she is featured flirting with female characters Chun-Li and Cammy. Her official profile mentions her love for large breasts. Even though it may seem clear to the audience that she has an interest in women, she has yet to be confirmed as either bisexual or lesbian.
Games have become more accepting on the LGBT topic with games such as Fable, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Bully, Dragon Age and Mass Effect allowing same-sex relationships. Fallout 2, released in 1998 became the first game to feature same-sex marriage in game. Grand Theft Auto having gay clubs you can enter, male cops making homosexual comments, homosexual shop owners and AI references to the Village People. Metal Gear Solids bisexual characters Vamp, Scott Dolph, Volgin and Major Raikov. Persona 3s storyline details on an intense lesbian crush between an unnamed character and main character named Mitsuru Kirijo. Persona 4s Kanji having a Shadow Self that hates girls and likes boys. The game also involves cross-dressing and gender questioning.
The thing is there still has yet to be a game released where the main playable character is a confirmed homosexual. The game concept would face a lot of stereotype offense. Seeing how previous games were forced to switch characters because of the complaints that homosexual characters seemed weak or depicted them as too flamboyant. Some are uncomfortable with the awkward comedy that comes with characters like Makoto coming onto other straight characters.
With that being said, my question is if a game with this concept were to be released in the future will people be open to the idea? Will people not involved in the LGBT community buy the game or find an interest? How do you believe the gaming community will react to a game like this? What kind of game genre do you think would be perfect for a strong LGBT influence? How do you think a game like this will affect the gaming community, if at all?
