Earlier today, Infinity Ward?s creative strategist, Robert Bowling spoke to Eurogamer and admitted that he felt both Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 deserved a purchase from any first-person shooter enthusiast. In similar regards, the mastermind behind Gears of War 3, Cliff Bleszinski, has commented often on how impressed he is with Naughty Dog?s upcoming title Uncharted 3. Here is my question. Why do these comments and opinions from icons in this industry have such an impact on not only the media, but gamers themselves? Read more for my opinion on the subject.
Sure, leaders in this industry such as CliffyB and Robert Bowling both want their project to do better than the competition, but at the end of the day they are gamers just like us. How come such a commendable group of those who take part in this hobby react so strongly to one praising their competition? What, is Robert Bowling hurting the sales of Modern Warfare 3 by stating any fan of the FPS genre should pick Battlefield 3 up? No. He is simply a gamer and understands that Electronic Arts has an amazing experience to deliver later this year with Battlefield 3.
Those who respond and are shocked by such statements make me feel as if they are trying to turn gaming into politics. All you hear about in politics today is one side bashing the other, why would we want this to become a standard in gaming? Just because someone works within the gaming industry does not mean they should be restricted to their work and their work only. I actually prefer to see true gamers take the high-level positions in this industry as this allows for them to better connect with their consumers and supply an experience that we can all enjoy.
Would you guys rather have a circle of Bobby Kotick?s running this industry fighting back and forth over who has the better title? Would you rather have non-gamers make the decisions on what we enjoy doing? These are the questions I ask to all of those so heavily impacted by someone such as CliffyB or Robert praising their competition.
