Does the name Shinji Mikami ring a bell to any of you? If it does, you probably know him best for creating the infamous survival horror series, Resident Evil. Since then Mikami has worked on various titles such as Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 4, Shadows of the Damned, and his last major project being Vanquish. Shinji has graced our news feeds after he was included in an announcement from Bethesda stating they would be publishing a new “survival horror” title that he and his development team at Tango Gameworks are working on, codename: ‘Zwei’. Read on for more details on the project and what may take place within this new adventure.
It’s no secret that Shinji is a veteran when it comes to creating all-thrilling horror titles, and in a recent press release he showed his enthusiasm and seemingly significant dedication to making ‘Zwei’ an “experience of *pure* survival horror, one which he defines that will push the limits of fear and exhilaration.”
As enticing as that sounds, what exactly does the pure imply? Its been a while since gaming has seen a legit horror experience that hasnt ended up as more of an action title with a little scare here and there. With the survival-horror genre being possibly the furthest thing from whats hot right now, do you think Shinji and his team at Tango can give it a comeback?
Along with a collage of what he says gives a feel for the tone and direction the production is taking (below); Shinji also made the following statement:
A true survival horror game is one in which the player confronts and overcomes fear, says Shinji Mikami, president and creative director for Tango Gameworks. I’ve found my focus and once again I’m striving for pure survival horror. I am being very hands-on in the development of this game to ensure that the quality is there. Rest assured.
The eager spirit Mikami demonstrates when speaking of ‘Zwei’ is both intriguing and intimidating. With most of his titles being rather successful, I don’t doubt that he has quite a surprise for thrill-seeking gamers up his sleeve but to satisfy our curiosity, what exactly can we infer from the tidbit of information that has been released?
Below is the collage I mentioned before, which they [Tango] put together for the announcement. It is supposed to give us a glimpse of different environments that will be present in ‘Zwei’.
From what looks like an abandoned ship at the bottom-left to what could be a watchtower over a town at the top, this photo feels Silent Hill-ish.
There is still much to do over at Tango Gameworks. As of now they are still in the process of building their team. With all this publicity after the announcement Im sure they will have no problem finding suitable additions to the Tango team, however Shinji keeps by his statement that the game wont be released until 2013 at the earliest, and even though the platform is not yet decided; it is stated on Wikipedia that Mikami’s new game will use a heavily modified external engine although he wouldn’t say what. How very, very interesting
My interests are partially invested due to the lack of recent, and good, titles of this genre; seeing how well it will be received by the gaming community, and also because I myself am actually a fan of certain horror titles that end in Evil. Show us what you got Mikami!
What are your thoughts on Zwei? What are your expectations from Shinji, and what would you like to see as far as the story goes? Feel free to let loose in the comments below!
