Rejoice, basketball fans, the time has come again! It’s time to ball. NBA 2K15 was a great game, with its more life-like players, gameplay, and creating the NBA TV experience during the gameplay for all old and new basketball fans. While NBA 2K15 brought good improvements, NBA 2K16 is even better. In fact, NBA 2K16 is THE basketball game to have, in my opinion, and here’s why. This year, they added a plethora of dribble moves and styles, with much better control. The AI is much more challenging because in the old games, if you were really good, you could win by ten points or twenty points per game. This time, it is a lot harder to outscore the AI, because they are much smarter. They adapt to how you play, so you can’t keep abusing tactics. What this does is force you, the player, to actually play basketball. Alley-oops and normal passes won’t always work because they will get swatted. That’s where the new passing buttons come to play, and the game gives you many options to use so you can complete a play and score. Playing against the computer becomes more fun and irritating at the same time, in a good way. The controls are more fluid thanks to a new setup. For new players, the new controls will take some time to learn, but not hard to master at all. Some moves take time to learn too, such as the “pick and roll” and calling plays. Calling for substitutions, however, is annoying because of all the menus you have to go through during the live action.
My Player has been totally revamped because Spike Lee. He directed the story development of your created NBA player, which is called “Living the Dream.” From here, you will be able to choose to be a franchise player, or the quiet hard worker. If you pick the hard worker option, it will help your player develop into a great player, while the franchise guy will get your player more money and fame. It gives the player the opportunity to see what it is like to live the life of the NBA star. The story is pretty well-done. It has its dramatic moments and drama, just like watching a Spike Lee movie.
Playing online with other players is as fun as playing people in other competitive online games. The issue is you will always run into connection problems or lag with sports games. You can do 5v5 with your friends or other people. You can use your “My Players” in actual NBA-style settings and rules. What this does is allow you to play your created players, and put them to the test against other “My Players”. Most of the online modes are the same as last year’s game. It is not perfect, but pretty good (depending on connection).
Players look more life-like. The animations are more fluid. Veteran NBA 2K players will recognize some of the old animations, but be able to recognize all of the new animations as well. Players look more like their real-life counterparts, and crowds react to team performance. The commentary in the game is as good as it ever was, if not better. The commentators will voice out most of the amazing plays you do. When they talk to each other, it feels like they are actually having a natural conversation. They added Greg Anthony into the lineup, which makes for some really interesting and funny commentary. In the halftime shows, they added Kenny “The Jet” Smith. It feels like an actual NBA broadcast. All they need now is Charles Barkley. They added new player interviews. For example, during a game, they would cut in an interview of a player during a commercial break. It makes you geek out.
If you are a true NBA fan, you have to get this game. If you are new to NBA basketball or just love sports games, I suggest you pick this one up. It gives you the whole experience of the NBA game. It plays very well, is much more challenging, and the commentators are very entertaining. Other sports games should follow what NBA 2K16 is doing.
Final Score: 9.0/10
