What's up SOCOM and MAG fanatics?! I am glad to inform you all that SOCOM 4 has been officially announced for the PlayStation 3. Now while many of you guys may be thinking right off the bat that the SOCOM franchise is dead or you have judged the franchise off of SOCOM: Confrontation, I have news that will wash those ideas away. Read more for the full details!
Zipper Interactive, the team behind SOCOM (excluding Confrontation) and MAG, is going to be the team behind SOCOM 4. This means that we should be able to rest and not worry about another crappy SOCOM game (sorry Slant Six
). SOCOM 4 will feature a single-player operation and online multiplayer capable of 32 players at once. Now while Zipper Interactive has not released too much information about SOCOM 4, they have given some details about the single-player.
An aggressive military unit has taken control in a South Asian country and as the Ops Com, you will be responsible for leading a five man squad into the county and return peace before it is too late. You will have only six days to lead your squad through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army that vastly outnumbers you.
Now if you are like me and want more information, I am also glad to inform you guys that the folks at GameTrailers TV will be airing the world premiere trailer of SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 am EST/PST. All you will have to do is tune into Spike TV during this time, or just wait till tomorrow where it will be posted here on TheGamerAccess.com.
As far as release dates, all Zipper Interactive has said is this fall, which is pretty surprising considering MAG just released. Now while all you MAG fanatics might be bothered by this, Zipper Interactive has come out and said that MAG will still be fully supported and the work of SOCOM 4 will not halt any further improvements of MAG.

With all this time spent on MAG, SOCOM 4 it should have 4 player co-op, you know, because Zipper delivered 256 players in online battle, allegedly, to show the "power" of the PS3. Lets see them Zipper deliver the power of a 4 player co-op shooter through the campaign that isn't linear to further demonstrate all that PS3 blu-ray power?

I'm not sure that MAG even broke even, much less fund the development of a new game. But it is pretty silly that the PS3 will have three exclusive shooters...none of which is even threatening to be the primary shooter for the console.

@Louie - I agree and part of the reason it is that way is because there just isn't enough people interested in sony exclusive shooters that own ps3s. mw2 and now bfbc2 will have it on lock. I know people who just bought bfbc2 and didn't buy MAG but bought mw2, wtf? I know MAG is a way different type of game but people want to play these generic shooters (I use generic because they are all generic and the same, not that they don't make money or sell)
Warhawk, Resistance 3, Infamous 2 and a few others I'm probably forgetting could have gotten more attention, now people will be confused. Wait did zipper make socom or MAG or wait what? lmao, if it's good fine but if not then...... oh well

I really hope SoCom 4 turns out to be the best shooter in the world. But I can't help but think it's going to get lost in a maze of MAG, Battlefield Bad Company 2, COD25, Medal of Honor and whatever other shooters get released this year.

Ponder this though, is there really anything new that anybody can do with a shooter? And if so how would they do it? The only way to bring freshness is to add features and a good story but it is still a shooter, third or first person so you just gotta pick and choose which ones, or the main one, you like. Just like we talked about the story mode games and their value compared to games with multiplayer, does it really make sense to buy multiple shooters? For me the answer is a big HELL NO.
I'm interested to hear what you have to say about it. I postponed my show just for the announcement so I have plenty to say about it

I think there are far too many shooters, but I also think that gamers don't care because the releases tend to be spaced out. So BFBC2 comes just as we're over MW2. The problem is when you start talking about exclusives. So now PS3 owners have to choose between many more shooters than do XBOX owners. That can't help but fraction the sales and gamers for the console.
And I don't think there are many new things to do with shooters. But I don't think gamers care about that either.

and ya...MAG is great, totally new experience...but its only sold 600,000 copies in 5 weeks. Dont think its funding socom 4. and like louie said they probably lost money on it. besides...you know this will get delayed until next year, zipper doesnt push out bullshit thats not finished.

@The_Claw - I agree and I hope u r right. I hope it gets pushed to holiday, but I didn't even see a release date for it in the first place. If anything MAG helped them get their online/network stuff figured out. Either way gamers, namely ps3 gamers, do have some tough decisions to make.
We will definately go into this Monday on the Goons and I will touch on it today with my show
