Sony's E3 2011 Press Conference was filled with many exciting debuts and announcements, but one of the games that came as a shock to the audience was a title that was announced originally during GDC Europe 2009, Dust 514. The console-based MMORPG will take place on the planets in the Eve Online Universe as the first title developed by CCP Games since Eve Online. With integration of Eve Online and Dust 514 being one of CCP Games' primary focuses with their upcoming title, all events that take place within Dust 514 will have an impact on Eve Online and players within both Dust 514 and Eve Online will be able to interact within battle sequences to help progression throughout the massive Eve Online universe. Dust 514 will also adopt the "cover charge" requirement, breaking away from the standard pricing structure used with most console/handheld titles today. Read more for more details on the Dust 514 "cover charge" system and how it will be implemented on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CCP Games CEO, confirmed in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz that players will be required to spend $10-$20 in order to play Dust 514. Hilmar has called this fee a "coverage charge" and stated "You're really getting the game for free but you have to pre-buy credits in the beginning," he continued. "We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it." He also confirmed that the money spent would be converted over to in-game credits to be used within the Dust 514 universe.
The CEO admitted himself that he expects a slow adoption rate of Dust 514, but anticipates that over time it will become an ever-evolving experience that gamers will flock to. I personally will wait to see how CCP Games implements the in-game credits before making any judgments, but if Dust 514 delivers on all of its promises, I personally see Dust 514 becoming a hit without the standard $60 up front investment. What do you guys think?
Dust 514 is scheduled to release during spring 2012, exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on the PlayStation Network.
