WET Review

Imagine, if you will, if you could turn a Quentin Tarantino movie into a video game. It would certainly have violence. Tons of it. It would have a different type of lead character. Maybe a woman with guns and a sword?

It wouldn't feel like it was made in current times. I am thinking a '70s feel with a hint of grain on the film and it would more than likely tinker with the timeline so it feels like the story isn't on train tracks.

Well, WET has all these things. Read more, though, to find out why it doesn't come close to the greatness that is Tarantino, but tries really hard to.

WET follows the story of Rubi. She is basically a super mercenary with little emotions and plenty of killing skill.

She wields duel handguns, sub machine guns and shotguns. Then she can break out the sword if things get boring. She'll platform, do incredible acrobatic stuff, and even jump from one moving car to the next and the bad guys she faces are pretty unique. I'm pretty sure the last boss is the ghost of a tattooed hooker.

Here is a mixed bag of tricks that I present in video form.

Sweet right? Negative. All that badassness falls apart when you actually play the game and realize two crucial things. One, the story in the game is horribly put together. Two, it's easier to kill people diving from a semi-truck onto a speed car than it is just standing still and the graphics suck.

Why WET is awesome.

The first 20 minutes or so are pretty fun. You just jump around shooting the hell out of people. That's always a good thing and Rubi is a potentially cool character. She's equally muderous as she is intriguing. She doesn't appear to be tied to anything or anybody and just wants to slice up anybody she can. Then there is the music. It is super cool. There is most certainly a Tarantino feel to the music selection that reminds me very much of Kill Bill.

The game also uses the rage mode to allow us a few minutes to run around a really red room and destroy anybody in it. Again, that's fun.
Here is a video of the rage mode.

Why WET is not awesome.

There are significant amount of downsides to almost all the goodness mentioned. Once you get over the jumping and sliding, the gameplay gets boring and tedious. And that happens fast.

Never is this more visible than in the boss battles. Try to picture jumping from side to side while you're shooting buckets of bullets into the bad guy.
Wait, you don't have to imagine.

Here is a video.

And while Rubi is a cool character, we don't know anything about her.

I completed the game and can't tell you why she's a mercenary or why she is so mad. Why would a new IP introduce a potentially great character but never really get into the story of that character. This point is maddening in this game.

Overall

This game is good enough to fight though some pretty annoying game play, but nowhere good enough to purchase. Sliding and wall running are good ways to get kills. Both other games have done it in a less forced way while still maintaining some sense of a story. Rent people. Rent.

Final Score: 7.5/10

@ Louie - You still think it's a 7.5/10 even with the downsides you mentioned? I played the demo and thought it was ok but it really reminded me of Stranglehold, which I liked but that game was not perfect by any means. I will probably rent it just to check it out when I run through Marvel: UA 2. Nice review

@David. I do still think it's a 7.5 despite the negatives. The game isn't completely broken or unplayable. And it's still better than many of the second/third tier games. I played through it once and will probably play through it a second time to get the trophies.
And good luck with Marvel. That game is rubbish.

@ Louie - lol I was thinking of taking it back. The first time I played it seemed alright, I liked the first one. This one got boring hella fast, you can't even die unless you really try man it's not hard at all.
