PS3 Version of NFS: Shift Outsells 360 Version First Week Possibly Due To Forza 3

E-mail Print PDF

Need for Speed: Shift

According to VGChartz, the PS3 version of Need for Speed: Shift has outsold the 360 version the first week. Many people claim this could be due to the fact that the PS3 just received a new model with a $299 price and sales have been rocketing, but I feel there is something people are forgetting about. Read more to find out.

Need for Speed: Shift PS3 vs. 360 Sales

As you can see, Need for Speed: Shift on the PS3 outsold the 360 version, but what could be the reason for this? I believe the reason for the 360 version selling less than the PS3 version is tied to Forza Motorsport 3. Forza has a large fanbase and many 360 owners are anxiously waiting for the upcoming release of Forza 3. If you own a 360, Forza 3 will be your best bet in most cases as it brings customization to a whole new level and is overall a larger game. Not taking anything away from Need for Speed: Shift as I feel its one of the best racers this generation, but it does not reach the level of Forza Motorsport 3.

Many people may combat my statement by throwing Gran Turismo 5 into play, but you must realize that it does not launch until March 2010 (Japan) and possibly later in North America and Europe. If Gran Turismo 5 was releasing right around the corner, I would have just rented Need for Speed: Shift and bought Gran Turismo 5, but since that is not the case, I bought Need for Speed: Shift to hold me over until Gran Turismo 5 launches. Please be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts.

Ok, but

That's wrong, people just recently found out that Gran Turismo 5 would be releasing in March 2010. So, you're idea is flawed. Most people believed that GT5 would be coming out at the end of the year, but hence people still bought it.

I think you're wrong. Most Need for Speed titles sell more on the PS3 and this is no different.

Ok, but nothing - you were talking months away for GT5 at least
written by Dirk, September 26, 2009
The 2 biggest releases for a racing simulation will be Forza 3 on 360 and GT 5 on PS3. Even if PS3 was released by the end of the year you are probably talking 2-3 months and not 1-2 weeks. So yes I agree with the article writer. The fact that Forza 3 is right around the corner versus GT 5 which is as far as we knew was at least 3 months away it makes sense. If my friends and I are only going to get a couple weeks out of NFS: Shift before Forza 3 comes out I would probably rent it and not buy it. As a matter of fact that is exactly what I did.

That was all based off of speculation and the only people who knew about this speculation were the hardcore gamers who read about video games online. Also, there was no release date so no one knew when it would come unlike Forza 3 which has a date and would affect sales of a similar. 360 racer

That is incorrect. With the Need for Speed franchise, the 360 has either had more sales or the sales have been neck and neck.

Wow, I never really speculated about this though until I saw this...
I really think it was pure instinct for more people to buy the PS3 version over 360
And more to the fact that PS3s are selling like hotcakes and people are buying more PS3 games

ODST
written by ChrisW, September 27, 2009
Yeah... so 40K is a big difference... It's not like it was 400K or more!
Also, don't forget that Halo3:ODST also just came out. 2mil in one day. I'm certain that's where a lot of people's hard earned cash went. They'll buy NFS later when they get their next allowence or paycheck.

(Note to "Halo Hatters;" shut up and go play your overly-Japanese-cliched-"and I do mean CLICHE!"-tootiefruttie-reprimanding-children-and-silly-arms-dealing-monkey-of-a-sidekick MGS4 if you want a better story and graphics! Oh and don't forget the Racey Photography Sets and Bikini-clad Multiplayer Costumes!!! smilies/grin.gif Or even the graphcially beautiful Uncharted 2!!! Yeah, they're much better games! BUT...)

Sorry this "Note to Halo Hatters" has nothing to do with NFS or Forza... But I figure someone would be a Prepubescent-Nazi-Fanboy and say something stupid about it. smilies/sad.gif

Batman AA sold more on the PS3 than on the 360,, i don't think it's because of Forza 3 and I don't think it's because of the extra contents on the PS3 version, because those guys on the 360 were going to get the 360 version regardless of the extra mestra....

I think it's becoming a normal trend recently that the PS3 versions of the Multiyplatform games are selling better than those of the 360 and I think it's because the install base of the PS3 is bigger than the install base of the 360. Although Microsoft sold more 360 than the PS3's of Sony but I think that the actual working xbox 360 that do not surffer the RROD are far less than 30m units. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual number of working 360 units are less thank 20m.

not really important

Its always gonna be the case that a certain few select games that will outsell on the ps3 than the xbox. The need for speed series has been pretty teribble of recent times and the latest game is ok, but still no where near as good as forza or GT5 prologue. Its a fact on the need for speed series that the sales have been steadily declining. More people are a little more conscious when purchasing games. Limited money, it should be noted of the coming releases, not just racers but shooters etc. The new call of duty, the GTA 2nd expansion.
On the PS3 fifa, ninja gaiden 2, NBA etc..
there are soo many better games being released in the near future on both sonsoles, and it shouldnt really be seen that Need for speed sold more on one console than another.
it should be seen that NFS no longer sells many games. im sure the sales will stay similar, in that the ps3 will lead, but towards the end of this year the xbox has more games with larger followings waiting to be released.
Next year will be about games for the ps3 no doubt and any other games like NFS wont touch GT5 etc...
Bozo said multiplatfrom games sell more on the ps3, thats not always true.
GTA IV, Cod 4, Cod WAW, WET, madden, marvel ult alliance 2, its a bold claim to make that all multilplatform games sell more on the ps3 because they dont.
I think each console has different type of players, the most popular games will sell very well, but others like madden etc people seem to prefer/or buy more on the xbox.
The PS3 games tend to be more racing, RPG, dirt2 etc...
Thats all by sales on the vgcharzt site before people start flaming

Explain this then...
written by RealGambler, September 27, 2009
PS3 Batman: Arkham Asylum 0.94m
360 Batman: Arkham Asylum 0.83m

I have a simple explanation...
First: 30 millions Xbox sold, but quite a few millions bite the dust and are on a shelf as a spare part. People bought a Arcade version to replace main unit. So basically, the TRUE install base is really getting closer than we think since many 360 are no longer "live" (no pun intended!)
Two: People who bought $600 or $500 consoles can likely afford games more often than people who had no choice but go with the cheaper console. This is starting to show up because ports are now being made about equal.

gt forza need for speed and other games
written by keysy420, September 27, 2009
here is what will really be intresting tekken 6 comes out at the end of the month multiplat. if that game does better on the ps3 then their is somethign that needs to be said about the whole market in general. one will be that the 360 fan base is maybe inflated a little bit which it is i know because i bought 6 of my 14 xboxs and now i dont even play it so point proven im not the only one.The next thing that it will show is that these games that were once sony's and went to the 360 will still be sony's. people know sony for certain games and if they have the ps3 and that game comes out they will most likely choose it on the ps3. plus new owners are buying games so games coming out now will have a better chance on the ps3.lastly is shows that 360 owners arent buying all the games, why people talk about how many ps3 owners dont buy games there are people who buy games, just not every game. i know a girl who has had a ps3 since launch and only plays need for speed. that's her game that's why she bough the system.
now forza 3, since it has been shown that all cars in gt is going to have damage the thing that everyone was complaing about personally i dont care either way.My question is do you think that the damage being put into gt take away from forza being even comparable to gt? because to me forza isn't even comparable to get more so to need for speed. That is no fanboy talk either im being serious do the numbers. 400 cars damagable to 1000 damagable in gt. rally car nascar and the gt series in one game compared to just one in forza. seriously are these games even comparable one doesnt even have a night and day system. look what im saying is that since this has happen the damage in gt it makes the forza game look like a joke.

Im not a fanboy and i very much like both of the consoles..from my point of view, the article and most of these comments are true. Its possible that there are some gamers waiting for Forza3, and at the same week Halo came out which is think gamers would definetly bought Halo ODST over NFS. I would rather spend all my time on HALO... about PS3 selling like a hot cakes its also an effect. Price cutoff, a lot of people buy.. and if it were me, i want to try my new console with a new games.. so i choose either Batman or NFS smilies/smiley.gif

Xbox vs PS3 again.
written by RetsaM, September 27, 2009
People also forget the fact that playstation 3 doesn't have too many options when it comes to games anyway, so when something good does come out on it, it may sell quite alot of copies.

What "GOOD" (key word) simulation racer is out on PS3. Xbox 360 has the hopes of Forza 3 coming out real soon, PS3 has been getting told "Gran Turismo is coming when it's ready" and it hasn't been ready since it was shown in 2006. We are going on 2010 with no racer on PS3, so Xbox 360 isn't selling on this due to the fact a game that most likely will be better is coming in less than 2 months and Playstation 3 doesn't really have a big selection of games like 360, most people waste their money on something worse to be honest (like the 60$ expansion pack, recently lowered to 50$ within a week, Halo 3 ODST, prime example) [but thats going to start a whole different argument i guess]

Hilarious
written by Smitten, September 27, 2009
Of course the PS3 version outsold the 360 version. PS3 owners are literally STARVED for good games so when one finally arrives they all run out in masses to buy it. Besides, I'm sure 360 owners were saving their $ for Halo ODST which I'm sure outsold day one alone what NFS Shift sold for both systems combined.
