Game controllers or game pads, as some people call them, haven't really changed in 25 years. As you can see from the controller family tree (via www.axess.com/twilight/), controller designs have not exactly differed from generation to generation. Basically, every iteration has only added more buttons and a different design. Recently, Nintendo stirred things up a bit with the Wiimote, and now both Sony and Microsoft are jumping on to the motion controller bandwagon with their own designs, e.g. Arc and Natal.
