The term “gaming” means so many things nowadays – it is tied up to PC, tablet, and smartphone video gaming, to playing gambling games on and offline. Its industry is one of the most profitable ones, and it is no wonder why. Fun and entertainment are one of the most important aspects of people’s lives; hence it is not surprising to hear that even thousands of years ago bones were used for the creation of gaming tools.
The last few decades were revolutionary for the gaming industry and slot games with bonus rounds. With the technology came an entirely different form of “playing games” which developed incredibly fast since its origin – and it is video gaming. This type of entertainment showed up in the early 70s and with what we now know as low graphics and not such a great performance. Fast-forward to the modern days, we not only have HD products that are easily accessible at anyplace and anytime of our day, but we started to discover a new form of fun thanks to virtual reality that is yet to take over the world.
The Early Years
The first type of what can be called a video game appeared in 1940, and the product was based on the mathematical system similar to the ancient game of Nim. It was presented on display and played by thousands of people who were almost always defeated by a computer. But, the first real arcade video product created by Nutting Associates and titles Computer Space came only after three decades in 1971. A year later, Atari came up with an idea to contribute to arcades by adding Pong.
It wasn’t long until a huge number of restaurant chains in the US started adding similar video games to keep up with the new modern wave. As people are known to be competitive, measuring records and being at the top of the list became a sensation. This was when multiplayer game showed up, but they limited players in a way that they had to compete on the same display.
In 1973, the strategic product called Empire was the first one to introduce separate screens for gamers. Between 1978 and 1985, gamers spent over 300,000 hours playing the game. Not long after came the first 3D multiplayer product created by PLATO – both the creator of Empire and the 3D space shooter. This company was the first one to open the road to the internet and those games we know of today.
Though gaming became hugely popular, especially among younger generations, not many people from that time could guess that nowadays, only every fifth American household doesn’t own a gaming system – which means that a vast majority does.
The Fast Revolution
It is hard to believe, but there was a point when the industry crashed. This happened in 1983 after numerous neither refreshing nor engaging low-quality games came to life and ended up being unpopular and causing massive losses. This meant a huge turn for the industry that needed to bring something new and fun as fast as possible while placing those unsuccessful titles under the carpet. Hopefully, home computers started to gain popularity and were affordable, which opened a new door for the industry. Primarily, what it meant at a time was that games were becoming:
• More complex;
• Less linear;
• Coming with better graphics;
• Easier to design with the BASIC code.
The BASIC code was used by Bill Gates when he designed a car-driving, simple game called Donkey. Though it did not become much famous at the time, it was brought back to life in 2012 through his iOS apps. The code allowed people to simply and easily create their own product using this code.
The Modern Gaming Days
The internet took over the world in the 2000s, and with the introduction of every new game, players could be blown all over again with better graphics and complexity compared to the previous generation. The cost of internet services and technology dropped, and according to the late researches, at least 1.5 billion of players use internet access for playing games. Online stores – Wii Shop Channel, Xbox Marketplace, changed the way games are being bought and how players interact with one another, while Sony managed to bring multiplayer video gaming to a completely different level.
The revolution of mobile phones, which are nowadays almost a synonym for smartphones, allowed gamers to download products via reputable online stores such as Play. It is unbelievable how many people started to play Angry Birds which was a boom for mobile gaming and probably wouldn’t gain such popularity if it was only available on PCs. It allows players to access it while on the bus, in the park, at school or work and doesn’t require much control, but still comes with high graphical effects.
The Future and Virtual Reality
Before mentioning the future of video gaming as such, it is important to mention one more aspect of the gaming industry which rapidly changed the last few months – gambling. For all these years, we tied up gambling to playing slots, poker, roulette, and other gambling games, but the future for gambling is much different. Gaming and gambling are getting closer and closer, and the evidence of it is the newly created shooter called Danger Arena. This product has many similarities with games such as Halo, but with a twist. By using only your skill for shooting robots, you get a corresponding reward. What is important about this is it is that the game is likely to be legalized in numerous US countries and all around the world where gambling is not legal.
Virtual reality, on the other hand, is a new kind of gaming that is still not accessible to anyone. Its price is expected to be dropped in the next few years, making the VR headsets more available. However, its future is more than promising since it gives an entirely different sensation of gaming by making it look real with all the graphic and sound effects. Who knows, soon we may be running from zombies and feel like actually being chased.
