With the imminent release of Madden 2010 just mere days away, EA and Sony held an invite-only tournament at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The tournament was a huge success with more than 264 players showing up for the tournament. The line was very long and even an hour before the event started, there were close to 100 people in line, which didn’t come as a surprise considering Sony was giving away a copy of Madden 2010 early, a brand new PS3, and a free bye to the MLG event that takes place in Dallas in a few weeks.
Once we got inside the Stadium, we were given passes where after that, we were lead to an elevator that took us down to the field. Once on the field, we put our names on the board in a tournament style bracket (I’m #56).
The rules of the game were also quite different from the regular Madden settings. The rules were; Two minute quarters, two minutes to set up audibles, and the game speed was set to very fast.
Once I was done getting the pre-game requirements out of the way, I commenced to taking on my first opponent who I dismantled quite easily with the Steelers defense dishing out 2 interceptions to ensure my victory. I took the First game 7-0 Steelers over Cowboys.
My next opponent didn’t go down quite so easily with me blowing a field goal kick early in the game off of an interception I had a few plays prior. This almost cost me the game; however my Steelers went on to dish out an Iron Curtain defense once my opponent got his one and only field goal of the game. The Steelers took this game 14-3 over the Colts.
My next opponent, Shawn was a fellow Steelers fan, so we both chose them; this was a close game with my opponent managing to run back a kick out for a 68 yard touchdown at the beginning of the first half. This left me in bad shape with the clock running down in the fourth quarter with me trailing 7-0 I needed a big play and Big Ben delivered first with a 40 yard pass to Holmes to put me on my opponent’s 15 yard line with 12 seconds left. The next play I ran a corner route to the corner of the end zone where I hit a single coverage Ward who dropped the ball due to a tackle. I had one second left on the clock and needed a huge play; needless to say I snapped the ball on for my last play looking for a prayer that was answered. I hit Holmes who was in single coverage against the best DB in the game Polamalu. Holmes managed to catch it over his defender in the end zone to tie the game at 7. So Sean and I went to overtime where I won the toss and decided to let him get the ball first. I know some of you are going like WTF??!!! But I did this because both of our offenses were not having a good day and to my surprise I banked right because Farrior aka Warrior got an interception on my opponent on the second play of his drive and ran it all the way back to my opponent’s 12 yard line. After a few failed attempts at getting a TD, I kicked an 8 yard field goal to secure my spot in the Playoffs. Steelers over Steelers 10-7.
Now my next game I lost to my opponent who took forever to do his audibles. This guy was a Madden Challenge veteran. He won the game, but only due to a mistake I made. I threw an interception on the 5th play of my offensive drive, which my opponent needed because I really had the upper hand on the offensive side of the ball. The interception led to my opponent getting the sole score of the game, a 23 yard field goal. My opponent got the ball back at half time where I manage to stop his drive and get possession of the ball back. I mounted a drive to get all the way to my opponents 25 yard line, but with time running out and me all out of time outs my Steelers came up short losing in an agonizing game 3-0 to his Eagles; however, I did represent TheGamerAccess.com and all of its readers well. I didn’t do badly for a guy that doesn’t play Madden on a regular basis though.
The gameplay has been slowed down a lot this year, but in my opinion it’s welcomed because it gives you more time to read your routes, or see holes open up for your running back. Also, there have been a few refinements to the run game; the running backs keeping their legs moving even when they contact opponents, this lead to me getting a lot of yards after contact. Your guys will also help push you through the crowd if they are behind you. This year they added a fumble meter which I really didn’t care for because it gives your opponent a chance to strip a fumble away from you. All in all, there are many small refinements to Madden this year and if you like the game then it’s a definite must buy.
I would like to give a shout out to Coach Ruckus from Maddensimplayers.com and US_Army from the DLB Network. It was cool meeting you guys and thanks for supporting me in the tournament 🙂
