The first thing you’ll see as you enter Rad Vintage is a Chicago Bulls calendar set to January 1993 and judging from the items on hand, time stood still right there.
Located on the far north side of Chicago in the historic Andersonville neighborhood is Rad Vintage, a store specializing in throwback sports paraphernalia, old school toys and collectibles, clothing of styles gone by, and just about everything else that will make you say, “Oh remember these!?!” Owner R.J. Geyman opened the store in October of 2010 and has been stockpiling it ever since. “We have a couple collectors that bring us tons if items and then we go through it at our warehouse and see what we want to bring to the store.” Read more!
One of the main draws of the store is the large wall of 90’s Starter team jackets and snapback hats which are now strangely back in fashion in the hip-hop scene and on nearly every teenager’s crooked head.
Besides all the sports clothing is a collection of toys that looks like it was snatched right from the closet of a kid from the 80’s. Inside of one case is the full Voltron crew, Castle Greyskull, the Darth Vader action figure carrying case, a rare set of 1981 McDonald’s commemorative Muppets glasses (back when kids apparently didn’t apparently didn’t cut themselves), a pile of Nintendo games and many other items that will bring you back to your childhood in a flash.
Also if you’re hungry, there is gum inside the slew of trading cards they have available from such legendary collections as Gremlins 2, WWF, Zelda, ALF, Growing Pains to name a few. But just a heads-up the gum tastes like hard sand, guess gum doesn’t age as well as nostalgia.
To really appreciate everything here, take your time and maybe you’ll find some new that’s older than you like a Nintendo Power Trapper Keeper and a California Raisins lunchbox for the upcoming school year. This store will bring you back in the day…if only for a short time.
