When Microsoft and game developer Turn 10 Studios announced a Forza Motorsports 3 demo would be available, Xbox gamers rejoiced as the demo would give them a chance to sample of the much anticipated racing simulator. Now that the demo has been out for a while, many gamers and journalists have had different opinions. From the graphics, to the crash animations, to the actual handling, and performance of the included vehicles, the demo gives us a feel for what it will feel like to drive in Forza 3.
But is that a good thing? Read more to find out.
The demo was released on September 24th. It includes five vehicles and one race track: The Camino Viejo track. The cars included are the 2009 Mini John Cooper Works, 2009 Ferrari California, 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro, 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR, and a 2007 Porsche Flying Lizard 911 GT3-RSR.
They are fully drivable from the full cock pit view. All five vehicles have damage animations and can all be rolled over. The demo also supports a rewind feature that let's you rewind a certain amount of time to correct your driving error.
It also gives you a nice sized race customization menu, letting racers decide the difficulty and amount of help they would like from the game while racing. The demo does not include the hot features, like the robust tuner options or the buy/sell/trade market, that make the Forza series out shine other racing games.
The demo overall was pretty underwhelming. Not to say the demo wasn't good and entertaining, but it did little to the imagination of what Turn 10 has blatantly drawn in our tuner brains. The overall crash and damage animations in the demo were little, if at all, different from Forza 2. The cosmetic damage looked horrible. Now please stop and think what would happen if you are driving like a maniac and smack into the tail lights of a Mini Cooper. Wouldn't you expect to see the Mini Cooper's whole tail light assembly fall out of the car? In the demo, a considerable amount of paint just rubs off of the car.
A considerable amount of area is dented and damaged, but whether its a vehicle with a low front end like the Ferrari California or a Full sized bumper on a Mitsubishi Evolution, the damage comes out looking the same. Rolling a Porsche 911 over three times and still having a very high spoiler still intact doesn't help at all either.
Turn 10 has bragged that there is nothing out on the market within years of Forza 3. I believe they have sabotaged themselves with their own PR. If the demo is anything like the game will be when released, Turn 10 is absolutely correct. The handling and car performance in other racing games are light years ahead of Forza 3.
Driving and handling the five different cars in the demo was less than impressive. All cars to some extent felt the same, that maybe due to the lack of being able to customize and tune each vehicle. The options menu to tweak the actual race is unsettling as well as I found very little difference between (simulation damage) to (cosmetic damage).
The physics of all the cars just do nothing at all to make you believe that this is a simulator. Plain and simple the cars just do not stick to the ground, literally. Rolling a car three times and still driving is one thing, but rolling a car over on its back, then just by hitting the left and right triggers and making the vehicle rock back and forth and onto its wheels again is just ridiculous.
All and all, the demo was fun to play, and was an overall racer. To some extent it can be called a simulation racer, but there is no doubt that this demo did little to seal the Forza franchise into what a lot of simulation racing fans would call the ultimate simulator experience.

Mark my words... this game is not quite ready... and the reviews will reflect it... (I am jus worried the game might suffer the same PR fiasco as PGR4 did...)
Dont get me wrong!! I own both the systems... Bought all PGRs(a dead series thanks to M$), FORZAs and GTs... n have pre-ordered Forza 3 Limited Edition...
